The first organised theatre company in Burgas dates back from 1893. Mihail Balozev, after returning from abroad, gathered enthusiastic young people and presented to the Burgas audience Vasil Drumev’s play “Ivanko”. This first theatre performance started a permanent amateur company and Mihail Balozev is considered the first manager of theatre activities in the city.
Since its creation, “Adriana Budevska” Dramatic Theatre has always been one of the leading theatres in the country. The performances are always sold out and visiting performers consider the Burgas audience as the most appreciative of the theatrical arts.
One of the cornerstones of the theatre’s history is its receiving the name of the National artist Adriana Budevska in honour of her 75th anniversary in 1953.
The Burgas theatre is associated with many famous actors and directors – Krastyo Sarafov, Petar Slabakov, Itzkah Fintzi, Konstantin Kotzev, Asen Shopov, Nedyalko Yordanov and many others.
