More than eighty students, between 1st and 12th grade, took part in the first competition about making kuker masks. Under the watchful eye of their teachers the students, all of them from different schools and art circles, made interesting and authentic masks. According to folk belief the kukers ward off evil spirits and cold weather.
The masks, themselves, have different forms. Some are like souvenirs; others are big and volumetric; or like art panels and embossed appliques. In the make of the masks, the kids used traditional materials: wool, red tassels, bells, beads and sequins. There is symbolism in every element of the mask, according to folk belief.
The exhibition of the masks will be on the 20th of February from 11:00 a.m. in the Regional library “P.K.Yavorov”, located on 10 Bulair Street. During the event awards will be given to the authors of the most original masks.
