The locks act as "heart valves" in the "circulatory system" of Atanasovsko Lake. They ensure its regular feeding with fresh sea water, regulate the water level and do not allow fresh water to enter the lake. In this way, they largely ensure the functioning of the unique and fragile ecosystem of the Lagoon.
Atanasovsko Lake was turned into salt pans as a measure against malaria in 1906. The dilemma was whether the lakes should be drained or turned into what they are now.
