First held in 2008, the European Maritime Day (EMD) is a prestigious international two-day conference and exhibition, organized in a different country each year. Over the years, host cities were Brussels, Rome, Gothenburg, Athens and Bremen.

The conference is at the heart of a project bringing together around 1000 industry leaders, including ministers, commissioners, lawmakers, academics, scientists and marine experts. The themes of the conference address the EU Integrated Maritime Policy to promote economic growth, skills, technological innovation, environmental protection and sustainable development across Europe.

On May 31 and June 1, 2018, Burgas will be the next stop on the European Maritime Day. The event is officially part of the calendar of the Bulgarian presidency of the European Union. It will offer plenary and thematic sessions (involving high-level political leaders and key experts), seminars, exhibition area, and a host of complementary events.

The event will be held in the building of Burgas Free University, located in the very center of the city.
