The International Day of Tolerance is celebrated around the world on 16 November. In 1996 the UN General Assembly calls on member states to honor this date tolerance and spread the idea of understanding among nations. Prior to that, on November 16, 1995, UNESCO member states adopted the Declaration of Principles of Tolerance. Right from the beginning is the definition of what tolerance is:

"Tolerance means respect, acceptance and understanding of the rich diversity of cultures in our world, of all forms of self-expression and the means of manifestation of human individuality."
